Come join us for our Basic Computer Skills course that equips students with basic computer skills
including, but not limited to, accessing and utilizing computer applications such as internet
browsers and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel). Students will be instructed on how
to navigate to various websites necessary for success in a technological age: online bill
payment, virtual communications (Zoom, email, social media, etc.), basic information searches,
etc.

Adult Education/Workforce - Basic Computer Skills Syllabus

Course Meeting Time(s): Tuesdays, 1pm-3pm
Course Length: Weekly for eight weeks / 16 Hours

Course Overview: The purpose of this course is to equip students with basic computer skills
including, but not limited to, accessing and utilizing computer applications such as internet
browsers and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel). Students will be instructed on how
to navigate to various websites necessary for success in a technological age: online bill
payment, virtual communications (Zoom, email, social media, etc.), basic information searches,
etc. Students will also be instructed on QWERTY keypads and typing efficiently for professional
and personal gain.

Supplies:
If students have a personal device (phone, iPad/tablet or laptop) they should bring it to class
weekly.
Weekly Outlook:


Week 1: Introductions. Introduce instructors and students alike. Basic introduction to
the computer.
● Turn on the computer.
● Access the internet via browsers (Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari [if applicable])
● Login to email. (If students do not have an email account, have them create an email
using Gmail.)
○ Discuss various aspects of email composing and etiquette.
○ Discuss how to write an email as well as attach a document.
● Have students login to Northstar Digital Literacy
● INDEPENDENT WORK:
○ Students should complete the lessons for both Basic Computer Skills and
Using Email.
○ If time allows, students should take the Northstar assessments. 85% is passing.
Homework: Make a list of skills you’d like to master while in this class.
Practice typing on the QWERTY keyboard.


Week 2: Have students write an email to the instructor using proper email etiquette.
They need to add an attachment whether it be an image or a document.
● Review basic computer components from the previous week. (Spend about 10 minutes
on review.)
● Access Microsoft Word. Students should be instructed on the basic steps to creating a
Word document. (They should be made familiar with the task bar and how to save and
print documents.)
● Have students login to Northstar Digital Literacy
● INDEPENDENT WORK:
○ Students should complete the lesson for Using Microsoft Word.
○ Students should take and pass the assessment. 85% is passing.
○ If students have not taken and passed all three Northstar assessments, they
should complete those at this time.
Homework: Practice typing on the QWERTY keyboard.


Week 3: Have students begin class by independently logging on and accessing
Northstar, their email account, and opening Microsoft PowerPoint. This should create several
tabs and force students to toggle between work spaces.
● Review Microsoft Word and answer any questions students may have developed since
the last meeting time.
● Practice typing. Students should complete typing exercises on typing.com for 30
minutes.(Learn to Type for Free)
● Review Google Docs. Make sure students understand the similarities it has with
Microsoft Word, but that Google Docs saves itself on the cloud.
○ Discuss how you can share Google Docs with people, and that they can have
varying levels of access to the document.
● INDEPENDENT WORK:
○ Students should complete the lesson for Using Google Docs and Microsoft
PowerPoint.
○ Students should take and pass the assessment. 85% is passing.
○ If students have not taken and passed all five Northstar assessments, they
should complete those at this time.
Homework: Students who have not been able to pass Northstar assessments should be
working through lessons again on Northstar. Practice typing on the QWERTY keyboard.


Week 4: Students should open Microsoft PowerPoint and create a five slide
presentation using pictures–clip art, images downloaded from the internet, and/or personal
photos.
● Teach students how to delete and restore documents from the desktop and the cloud.
● Introduce students to basic applications of smartphones.
● INDEPENDENT WORK:
○ Students should complete the lesson for Social Media and Information
Literacy.
○ Students should take and pass the assessment. 85% is passing.
○ If students have not taken and passed all seven Northstar assessments, they
should complete those at this time.
○ Students need to register in Elevate for ACE.

Students completing the CLA training with CVCC must meet all the online training modules and the certification exam. Although it is not a requirement, CVCC strongly recommends that individuals be at 8th-grade math and 10th-grade reading level before taking the course.

Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) certification (Mid‐technical level instruction)

The curriculum is designed to provide students with mid‐level technical knowledge of the world of

supply chain logistics. This course covers the material handling aspect of the global supply chain and

describes the mid‐level technical knowledge that front‐line material handling workers should master to

perform well. It is designed to give students more practical insight into the industry and how the

frontline worker fits into that environment.

Unit Subject Description

1 Product Receiving

Covers the activities involved in receiving products into a logistics

facility. Students will learn how the receiving activity is important to all

aspects of logistics including: production, inventory control and quality

control. They will also learn the types of documentation used in the

receiving department.

2 Product Storage

Covers the activities involved in stocking products. Students will learn

what factors affect how products are stored including: product shelf‐life,

hazards, weight and size. They will also learn about the importance of

proper routing of products and safe storage.

3 Order Processing

Explains the product order cycle. Students will learn about various

picking processes and how they impact warehouse operations. They will

also learn about the importance of picking accuracy and common order

picking forms.

4 Packaging and

Shipment

Explains packaging and shipping procedures. Students will learn what

types of packaging are best suited to products. They will also learn about

shipping documentation and basic load distribution principles.

5 Inventory Control

Explains how inventory control affects overall operation. Students will

learn basic inventory management principles, stock rotation and

inventory tracking methods. They will also learn about the technology

used to control and monitor inventory.

6 Safe Handling of

Hazardous Materials

An overview of the safe handling of hazmats. Students will learn about

hazmat classifications. They will also learn about the rules and

regulations that affect hazmat storage and transport.

Transportation

Modes

Explains, in detail, the various transportation modes used to transport

products throughout the supply chain. Students will learn the

advantages and disadvantages of common transport methods. They will

also learn about the rules and regulations that affect transport of goods.

8 Dispatching and

Tracking Operations

Explains how products are managed during transport, both domestically

and internationally. Students will learn about basic customs

documentation and the rules and regulations guiding international

transport of products. Students will also learn about intermodal

transportation.

9 U.S./Metric

Conversions

Explains basic measurement techniques. Students will also learn how to

convert measurements between U.S. and metric systems.

NC Medical Coding Certification Training (NHIT-9001)

This is a 16-week, online course. The CPC Certification Prep Course teaches fundamental medical coding skills for professional services (physicians, mid-level providers, etc.) and prepares you to take AAPC's CPC exam. The course covers CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM coding with hands-on practice coding real world, redacted medical records using CPT®, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II code sets. Assures a broad knowledge in reviewing and assigning the correct procedure and diagnosis codes for professional (physician) services. The prerequisites include knowledge of Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy. Work experience or other courses in healthcare may satisfy the prerequisites. CPC® Medical Coding Preparation Course Syllabus

Prerequisites: Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy required.

Clock Hours: 80 (Note: 80 clock hours accounts only for time spent in the online course, and does not include time spent outside the course or study time. Study time will vary widely per individual.)

Course Length: This course is a 16-week, instructor-led training. Successful completers will sit for the certification examination at the end of the course. 

Class Hours: Days/Times Per Week: Students meet once per week online. Students work on the training modules outside of class and can contact their AAPC-approved instructor when they need assistance.

Certificate of Completion Issued: Yes. A certificate of completion is issued upon successful completion of the class.

Course Description: The student will learn principles of medical coding related to the three main code books: CPT®, ICD-10- CM Code Set and HCPCS Level II. This course is recommended for anyone who is preparing for a career in medical coding for a physician’s office and strongly recommended for anyone who is preparing for AAPC’s CPC certification examination.

• A passing score of 70% or higher on all chapter exams
• A passing score of 70% or higher on the final exam
